YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — U.S. servicemembers looking at career options in this era of shrinking military budgets and force drawdowns might want to take a look Down Under.

 

The Australian government is recruiting experienced U.S. enlisted personnel and officers to fill a range of positions — from submariners to doctors — in its military, according to a posting on the Australian Defence Force website.

I just got back from there on monday, its a great country with great people and land.

in the major sidney paper (SDH) i saw a add for the aussi army with the starting pay at $62,000.00+ USD.

sounds great, but....

gas is about 6.50 a gal

small bottle of coke at gas stations 4.00 ea

fruit loops 7.50 a box

bread 5.00 a loaf

3 BR house in a nice but not rich neiborhood 300,000 MIN, want a nice house? 500,000.00 again min.

electric bill 300.00 MIN a month starting next jan

happy meal at micky d. 7.00

dinner for 4 (2 kids and 2 adults) NEVER less than 50.00 in the 3 weeks there.

and

.308 rounds START at 1.00 a round for the cheap stuff.

 

and the far left wing goverment passed the carbon tax this year that will add about 10% to the cost of everything starting next year. and they are cutting the military next year with fewer ships, aircraft (f-35), and heavy weapons.

I applied to the New Zealand Royal Air Force and Army... twice. They said "thanks, but positions for overseas applicants are full."

with only 7000 in the entire army (active and res.) and no real airforce (p-3 orions, 3-4 C-130s, and some light helos), and only 2 ships the NZ military has no issue filling there branches with local people. and the new government is planning to cut more soon.

in aus there is a HUGE need for people to work at the mines, everything needed from miners to security. they are hireing 15000 people this year from overseas. sort of like our ND oil boom. also a big boom in the civilian aircraft carriers (jetstar, virgin, etc...) i saw adds all over the place needing workers in avation.
