No, it is not required.

While not required, it is a great way to stay in touch with your squad and into the action. Baofengs (UV-5R) are good radios for the cost, it's what most people run at events.

Please do a little bit of self education on the BAOFENGs before grabbing it and using it.  It's very important to stay off of public safety frequencies.

Be extremely careful. A month ago on the river fire in California, division Delta had CB traffic constantly interfering on a federal frequency. I know we're pretty much going to be in the middle of nowhere, but it's better safe than sorry.

Yeah, the frequencies we use aren't in the federal band. I'd advise the technically incompetent to have someone with technical knowledge program their radio and lock it from accidental changes. No need to attract the attention of the bureaucracy.

First timer for Southern Front II. Just purchased a Baofeng UV-5R for this event. I don't know anything about radios other than push to talk. Is there anything in particular I need to know/do to prepare my radio prior to the event?

Yes, I suggest getting a programming cable and learning how to program the radio for different frequencies. Also, I highly suggest getting a chart that shows all non licensed frequencies. The exception is milsim’s in which case they will tell you what frequency to use.
