Need to re-address no MED rule with AEGs

Recommended Posts

At OBH6 I elected to use no face protection due to the heavy humidity index

during the OP. While I was positioned at the wall near Peggaces bridge I was

shot in the face by an opposing player at a distance of less than 8 feet. I know

stuff happens and I was the first one to tell the guy that when he apologized

for the face shot.

The hit area immediately swelled up and significant blood loss was present.

A cost medic (who was an actual EMT in real life) cleaned me up and after my

bleed out, I left for the FOB. Days later after the swelling had gone down and the

injury had closed, I discovered I had a 6mm BB under my skin.

So long story short - I think the no MED rule with AEGs shooting upwards to 400fps

has shown that the BB can penetrate unprotected skin under the 20 ft range and

that AMS staff should rethink this rule.

I am in favor of the 20 ft MED and re-allow automatic fire from AEGs that is pretty

much the rule with the rest of the world.

...anybody else's thought here?

Inside the MED - pull your pistol or milsim ax, simple as that.

I'm with KSWrench on this one. We all know the risks associated coming in to this. I (like you) chose not to wear a face mask as well due to the heat, and doing so I knew the risk of injury or possible dental damage (I have actually chipped a tooth playing CQB due to not wearing a face mask). That being said I don't see it as being a reason to re-visit the rules on engagement distances.

This however is an opinion of mine from several local play areas where players... I don't know what to call it really... abuse the minimum engagement rules? Needless to say the main reason I decided to try AMS games was to get away from the constant arguments over hits and engagement distances that seem to plague the fields in my area.

While your injury was unfortunate, I personally feel it was a risk you took by not wearing a face mask. I believe many would agree with me in saying that it should be a revision of your choice of whether or not to wear a mask and not of the rules themselves.

Most pistols are shooting almost as hot and sometimes hotter than AEGs so pulling a pistol sub 20 feet seems to be a wash to me.

Also being "milsim" no one is going to be yanking their pistol in "real life" just because they are closer than 20 feet to someone.

I agree with those above.  It sucks you got injured but that is a risk you accepted when you chose not to wear lower face pro.  And it's one of the reasons I wear mesh lower face pro no matter how hot it is.

I would love to see more places drop the MED for typical "rifleman" type AEGs, GBBs.

weapon control helps too. The face is a much smaller target than centre mass. Players should avoid face/head shots when they can. I know sometimes thats all that is peeking out, but @ 20ft there should be enough control to avoid.

and at the same time, WE ALL KNOW THE RISK. but a wire mesh mask doesn't restrict that much air flow on a hot n humid day. at least for my fat ass.

+1 to the opinions above. 400 FPS is necessary outdoors for proper distance and brush penetration with a standard AEG. Facepro is always recommended, and as hot as BH is/was, it's never a bad idea to wear sleeves or gear on high-impact areas.

0 Med is a player responsibility. Had I been the player taking the shot on you, unless I was very surprised and out of options, I'd have backed away a bit and opted to take the shot at your gear or leg to dampen the hit. It just so happens that you were in contact with a player that had more lax restrictions on his or her own play.

The AMS ruleset as it currently stands, is a testament to how much the staff trusts the player. The best course of action in this case would be to take the hit, and just mention that it would have been more respectable to either give the chance for a bang bang call, or to have backed up a bit before taking the shot. Player education is what changes our experience, not constrictive changes to a ruleset that's proven stable and enjoyable.

On a side note, I'm a strong supporter of semi-only for rifleman unless the use of low-caps is required. SAW's finally have a role in a team dynamic, and it should stay that way.

I'm not sure how many people know this anymore but AMS started out with Full Auto AEGs. The switch to semi-auto was pretty contested when it was originally made (I myself was against it at first); however, The switch to semi-auto created an obvious improvement in gameplay. AMS has always been innovative in the community and many fields/hosts have followed suit also finding improvement in gameplay after switching to many of their rules. More than half of the fields I play at now are semi-only for rifles.

The idea of a MED for rifles at a large scale milsim game is not reasonable or manageable for the admin staff to monitor, let alone mediate the disputes.

Imagine a squad 6+ breaching a room containing another 6+ people. Everyone would be yelling "bang bang" or whacking at eachother with nerf swords (pistols regularly fire ~400fps in warm weather so thats not an option). It would be a joke and I wouldn't want to take part in that nonsense.

tldr: Most of the proposed rulechanges have been tried and didnt work. Wear a face mask if you dont like getting shot.

+1 for no MED and keep semi-only (riflemen role).

Yeah it sucks to get hit in the face, but there is no reason to impact everyone because others don't want to wear face protection and/or some people have control issues. Also, I wasn't a fan of semi-only, but I think it's had a positive impact. I can't see any benefit to blur the lines of squad roles and devalue the SSW.

Let's not devolve to skirmish rules and keep things the same.

If I'm understanding the OP correctly, he'd rather get shot 10 times in the face from 20 feet away than a couple of times from 8 feet? No thanks. Glad to see everyone in here putting this idea out to pasture. Minimum engagement rules cause way more trouble than they're worth.

I wasn't there; I am late (reply-wise) But I do agree with everyone else, Yes, 400 FPS will break skin at 8 feet (done it) But, Forgive me if this sounds aggressive, mean, etc, I promise it is not. But- most of us are ( I assume you as well) adults-or at least young adults and all of us are responsible for our own well being- Partly the other guy's fault, should have said "Bang Band" or shot gear, But, within the same rate, if i get an open wound, due to lack of protection, I am responsible ( I assume the waivers for AMS state this as well) for that injury due to my choice.

Like in the motorcycle work: ATGGAT (All the Gear All the time) They always say "Dress for the slide, not for the ride"- I still don't wear full gear because of personal preference. But I know if I lose a leg or an arm it's my fault. It's choices, not rules. It's like someone initiating a full face helmet law for all Bikers in the summer due to increase of deaths, and broken skulls. We know the risk and take responsibility for it.

Just me $0.2 about it.
