How useful would a launcher be for AMS events?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm new around here. Never been to an AMS event before, but I'm planning on attending Copperhead in September, and after that, I intend to get to every AMS event I can, even if I have to travel to the other side of the country (I live in Colorado). Now, I'm looking at my load out and trying to get an idea of what I'm gonna want to buy before then so I've got plenty of time to plan for it. I'm seriously considering buying a stand-alone 40mm launcher so I can have the option of some portable anti-vehicular capability. But my question is this: At previous Copperhead events, have there been very many vehicles? In other words, would it be worthwhile to go ahead and spend the money on a launcher? And, as far as other events go, how prevalent are vehicles, really?

I apologize if there are dumb questions; I've just never been to any airsoft events that were big enough to actually haver personal vehicles in play. At the moment, the largest, most elaborate event I've attended was a local, 3 day Milsim op with sixty some odd players. Thanks!

P.S. Copperhead is gonna be my jump off point to the world of hard core, large scale milsim. However, it's not gonna be my only one. I also intend to attend evens by Lion Claws, Milsim West, etc. So while I'm specifically asking about AMS, I'm also curious if such a launcher would be a good thing to have on hand for events put on by other organizations as well.

Jake,

I'm also in Colorado.  My team will be heading to Broken Home 6 as well as Copperhead 3 this year.  We field both a rocket launcher (for anti-vehicle purposes) as well as a smoke grenade launcher.  Both are useful.

We also field a vehicle, it will be at both events. It's pretty recognizable.

In my and my team's experience, it all depends on technical/vehicle frequency and the size and weight of the launcher.

If you have a guy that loves to be pack mule, then that's all fine, but I'd argue that maybe half of the AMS event lineup has a high enough vehicle count and frequency to warrant bringing it along. It's still great for a team to have one regardless, but definitely check in an event's past forums and even video footage from other players from past events to see if player > vehicle conflict is a constant first.

Just my 2 cents. As my groups SQL, regardless of how much weight they are fine taking on, if there's dead weight I can cut from their kit that will slow us down, I do it.

Useful.

Ok, yeah, that looks pretty handy. So, how did that player do that? I don't know too much about airsoft 40mm launchers, but how would you go about launching smoke from one? Is it just a matter of putting a smoke grenade in front of another like you would a Nerf rocket? And how did he get that kind of range? My understanding is that in airsoft, 40mm launchers are pretty much close range only

Jake, some of these are launchers that use the Tactical Game Innovations (TAGINN) system.  There are shells that are loaded with projectiles.  Some projectiles explode after 3.5 seconds (Reaper's), some explode on impact (Archangels).  Just depends on the type of round.  I do believe this company sells smoke for their system as well.  All of these projectiles are a little spendy, but man are they cool.  And in my experience really freaking loud when they detonate right outside the truck door.

Our systems are independent, and are designed to pneumatically launch smoke grenades or foam (non-exploding) rockets.

Xtreme Airsoft sells this kind of stuff if you're interested. https://www.xtremeairsoft.com/14-grenades - Xtreme has good people working there and they can help answer questions about these in more detail if you're interested.

Oh really? That's awesome. Ok, cool, thanks. Good to know, and that should give me a good starting point for my research into airsoft 40mm launchers. Yeah, pricey, but I love the concept. Frankly, money's not too much of a concern anyway (gotta love being 21 with no dependents and a great job in construction!)

Dude, Twitch, I kinda hate you right now. Those grenades and launching systems are SO AWESOME that I'm a little annoyed I don't own any of it right this second, and it's gonna take a little while before I can save up the money to buy an initial launcher, at least one launching barrel (and I'm probably gonna want 2-3, because why not?) and some grenades. Grrrr..... No, but seriously, thank you so much for bringing that to my attention. God, I'm amazed.....

Nobody has a TAG round explode next to them and figure they're not dead. (unlike what tends to happen with less-than-dramatic nerf rockets) :)
