shotgun as a secondary weapon

What is the current ruling on shotguns as a secondary weapon I have been thinking about going from my trusty 1911 to a spring tri shot shotgun and I am wondering what I need to know. I am just a rifleman who uses his m4 to try and lay down the enemies of CoST

Plenty of people do it.  Personally, I'd bail on carrying either and just stock up on more magazines.

I've seen plenty run them as well. If nothing else they are a trusty backup if your primary goes down. 

 

I personally would follow Dave's advice however if you are standard rifleman. Ditch the sidearm, add a mag or two, and leave the shotgun in the car as a just-in-case option. You'll be lighter and your gear can be more simple. (Just be sure to follow mag limits of course.)

I'm confused why they are recommending ditching a sidearm for extra mags...you have a 7 mag primary limit regardless.

I just have been thinking about doing a move from call of duty 4 modern warfare were one of the characters pulls out his shotgun and tells his buddies I like to keep this for close encounters but now that I am thinking about it more I am definitely going to bring it as a backup weapon

Because 1. the mag limits are plenty, 2. your primary as rifleman will work in no med instances, and 3. no sidearm means no holster, pistol specific pouches or extraneous weight of a second weapon. Less bulk on you as a person, a more simple setup with fewer pouches, less weight. 

 

I'll leave out the additional argument of switch time to a sidearm as that's up to preference and situation.

Specs I totally understand all that, my point is as a rifleman you can only have 7 loaded mags regardless of sidearm or not. So to tell him "ditch the sidearm and get more mags" doesn't make any sense.

Not everyone has the same setup as you.  My normal kit has 5 primary and 2 secondary magazines.  For airsoft I ditch the secondary magazines so I can carry another primary.

It didn't even occur to me that not everyone would go for 7 mags. Thanks for the insight. In that case, yes go for more mags!
