Weapons (Ban or remove if needed)

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Andrew and im situated in southern North Carolina which puts me in a good position to go Faded Giant 5 (hopefully it takes place next year). What im here to ask is the weapons rule. Im 16 so income is limited and this summer is going to be my only chance to work. Im going to spend it mostly on gear and save a few hundred and I have a weapon currently, although its the full size ASG Franchi SAS 12 trishot. Are these allowed? I know its a noob gun but I like shot guns and id rather not spend a ton of money on a new gun just yet. I can accurately engage a man size target out to about 100 feet so I think its skirmishable. Not very Milsim I know, sorry. Thanks in advance and Im sorry if I stepped on any toes or broke any rules.

I don't use a shotgun so I am unaware of any specific rules for them but they are allowed. Let everyone get back from FG4 and they'll line you out. The only thing to consider as far as your individual combat effectiveness is that you'll need to carry a ton of shells to be on an equal standing with guys using AEGs. This is also true of shotguns in the real world, and the exact reason their use as anti-personnel weapons among combat troops has been on a steady yet rapid decline since World War II. Buy a lot of shells, don't waste your ammo.

NO sweat young warrior. I will echo the shotgun effectiveness. It's a great weapon for room clearing and tight spaces. I wouldn't take it out into the field though unless I had a rifle or carbine. If you do run it as a primary most of the time you will want to make sure you have a good team cohesion and you and your team understand your role.

Shells are big and take up a lot of space. You put a lot of BBs down range all at once but you will be limited on shots. So while you might be able to stuff 50-100 shells on your person (doubtful) your opponent will have stuffed 1500 BBs in roughly 10 mags.

What this ends up meaning is that you will be very effective for a very specific role (room clearing) but for only a very short amount of time. These events last hours. This is something you should think about.

I recommend getting some kind of light weight carbine and have the shotgun strapped to your back. This will make you twice as effective, more flexible and keep you in the fight longer..in the fight longer means you will have more fun.

Also you mentioned money being a concern.. a set of 12 shells costs around $20-$30 we will round it off $25. Shells will have 30 BBs. So you get 360 BBs down field but 12 trigger pulls. That's roughly $2 per trigger pull. That's not taking into account the cost of BBs.

A guy with an M4 will have a midcap mag with roughly 150 BBs. You can buy a box of 10 midcap mags for about $50. So you get 1,500 BBs down field for 1,500 trigger pulls. That's roughly $.03 per trigger pull. Again that's not taking into account the cost of BBs.

Just something to think about.

Thanks for the responses guys! Yeah I took into effect the shell conundrum. I guess ill just have to bite the bullet and buy an AEG even though I like gas blow backs. I got a year. The idea was Id be Breach/ CQC with some Thunder B's and my friend has the AEG and we'd roll with the squad everywhere. Any suggestions for the carbine? Because I like the idea of stringing it on my kit.

There really is no one answer here. There are several factors to take into consideration, what is your physical build? Are you in good shape? What else will you be strapping on? What do you think looks cool etc?

Honestly, if you going to carry two large weapons I would suggest a carbine that is small and light. Possibly go with a SMG. If you like gas blow backs...they are EXPENSIVE and can be fussy, plus the mags can run a small fortune.

My advice...get over to your local fields and ask to handle some of the weapons from other players. Ask them why they went for that weapon, get the pros and cons etc. Go to a physical store if you can and handle the weapons there as well.

Bottom line the best weapon is the weapon that meshes best with you. It will just feel right.

Like im JROTC and im the Raider Team commander so Im in decent shape, as in I can run around in kit and not be wheezing. My friend has an old Classic Army M15A4 that has some electrical issues but is in other wise stellar shape, plus he runs a thompson so he said its mine. You seem pretty grizzled in the art of Milsim so you do think thats a viable thing to do? Id just get a smaller version of my trishot and place on my back with some 550 or something

Well I would say if it works, it works. Personally my approach to gear is that you get what you pay for. I would rather pay the extra money and get something I can rely on for years than to try and save a few pennies and end up having it bust on me in the field and subsequently having to go purchase another gun.

That being said, it's free.

I would say snag the gun, figure out just what the electrical problem is and make the repairs yourself so that it is reliable. AEGs are actually rather simple in construction and function. Simple to learn but difficult to master. Since it is a free gun, I would use that to learn everything you can about it.

You will learn how AEGs work. You will learn how to make repairs in the field. You will be able to figure what you like and don't like which will give you a better idea for your next gun purchase. And best of all you will save yourself some money by doing upgrades and repairs yourself.

And if the gun works in the field...even better.

It's a win, win.

Shotguns are neat, but limited in their usefulness.  Echoing buying an AEG first.

What gear are you looking at?

Yeah I think im going to do that. And as for gear Im looking at a TMC 6094 and a MAP pack, woodland BDUs and all that. Basci kit that cost less than 250 all together. Was gonna buy a LOT of shells as well

Alright, let's add some.  Here's some other stuff you'll need:

1) Magazine Pouch/Shell Holders
2) Hydration Bladder (I assume this is going in your MAP)

3) GP Pouch (Radio, Snickerdoodles, AMS "tourniquets")

4) Eyepro

5) Boots

These get expensive real fast.  A couple suggestions: plan out kit loads for your AEG and shotgun, not both.  The easiest option would be to build an AR setup first (shell pouches are cheap, too).  Decide which pouches you want, then trawl the airsoft classifieds until you find them/something comparable.  Milsurp used to be cheap, but YMMV.

Refine the aforementioned list with your actual requirements/wants and maybe we can piece something together for you.

Another thing for you to keep in mind is that you will be placed in a squad and that squad may or may not be tasked with what is going on it the building. You could find yourself outside of the facility all day long or even all weekend. Take that m16 and fix it up and have a plan to play/fight where ever your command element puts you.

I didnt add all the other stuff on the list because I have most of it, I got 1 or 2 FOB bags (3 if you count an old ruck). I have boots issued through ROTC and my own set as well. DO you think coms is necessary? The PC im buying comes with a general purpose pouch, a PRC radio pouch, and a plain jane triple stack pouch on the front. AS for the weapon its a 10.5 with an old unknown mock can on it so im going to stop buy a local tech and get it fixed up. As for squads im in a crappy ROTC unit and used to getting shit on so I think ill be fine.My idea was instead of grabbing a gas pistol Id just buy a sawn off trishot and place it on my kit like my dad did in Iraq, when he was breaching buildings. Any thoughts? Oh bolt cutters, I want them on the MAP, they look bad ass, but practical or no. Thunder B's for clearing in place of m18 flashes or just go and get some R2B's? Thanks you guys are awesome.

Comms are only necessary if you want to be an effective team member, or you have inklings of leadership roles.  If your PC has all that built in then good deal.  I would recommend two shingles on the front - 3 will net you about 400 BBs, not much.  The length of the barrel doesn't tell us much about the AEG, other than the base model.  Who is the manufacturer?  Pistols are largely useless now that the minimum engagement distance has been done away with for riflemen.  I'd rather carry a couple extra mags, but /shrug.  Snagging the shotgun would have some use at some AOs, but I'd leave it at home for the field ones.  Bolt cutters have limited usefulness - one per platoon is plenty.  Something to discuss with your unit before an op starts.  As far as clearing rooms with grenades, it depends on AMS' ruleset.  I don't keep current with that since I don't carry any and it gets briefed at the beginning of an op.

What kind of eyepro do you use?

Dude, if you like your shotgun, bring it. It will be great for clearing buildings and airsoft is all about having fun. That said, I would recommend getting a scabbard for it and wearing it on your back as a secondary. I rolled with my grenade launcher on my back at Copperhead just because it was cooler and more fun to draw it off my back than to attach it to my primary (Heck. I even killed the Evike Humvee with it). I'm out of the Army. I'm done with being told how to do stuff, and dammit, I'm going to have fun at an event if I'm paying $180.00 and driving 25 hrs to be there! That's why I ran with my indoor gun at a largely outdoor venue. She's my favorite gun. Plain and simple. Would I have been more effective if I had run with my outdoor gun that has better range? Yeah. Probably. Maybe. I don't know, but I love my Galil SAR, and I promised her I'd take her to Copperhead! If your buddy can hook you up with a used AEG to run as a primary, and it is RELIABLE, then go for it. Otherwise, there are CYMA AKs and G&G M4s out there that are between $100-200.00 and work just fine, stock, out of the box. No, they are not amazing AEGs by any means, but they work, and they have a reputation for being reliable.

Anyway, do what you WANT to do. If you want to cut the sleeves off of a jacket, wrap yourself in belted dummy rounds, and run around with an M60 tucked under one arm, wearing a graffiti covered steel pot helmet, go live that dream. That's what airsoft is all about. Trust me. I learned the hard way. For years, I let myself get pressured into taking command and leadership roles at Milsim events, because everyone knew I was an Iraq vet NCO. The events stopped being fun, and started being stressful. It almost killed my love of the sport, so last year I flatly refused to be anything other than Pvt. Joe Infantryman at every event I attended. I got to kill vehicles as a grenadier, clear buildings as a rifleman, and mow people down as a SAW gunner. (I refuse to play medic, though, because my IRL civilian job is Paramedic!) It was the best airsoft season I have had in years.

To further add to this, there's nothing quite like having Obi-Wan Kenobi slide around the corner on his ass and bust a round off into your sternum with the Mossberg. I did this at my local field's Halloween game.

I used my breacher at RY3 and had great luck with it, I used it off and on but well worth it to see someone face when they are shot by a shotgun...
