GBB Starting Kit

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if I've asked this before. Because, it's been a few months since I've been active on this forum. Any start-up advice on what gun, parts, rig, etc. that would be helpful for a good start into the GBB area of airsoft. I'm pretty sure JP uses gas so any input you have would be great. Thanks a bunch in advance.

JP uses a polarstar on occasion.

If you Really Really want to go GBBR *Only*, just realize you're gonna have to carry a bunch of mags (which will weigh you down a lot) And be expected to make Lots (and I mean Lots) of trips to your fob to reload (30 rounds goes Fast)

I'd stick with Dave's advice and just go AEG

GBBR user here.  LM4.  The mags are real weight (actually a bit over real weight) and get heavy.  I only carry 5 or 6 but thats 6 to 7 lbs of magazines alone.  On small skirmishes at local fields where you are only on the field for 30 minutes or so it's no big deal I just reload in the staging area.  At larger OPs (just got done doing OP Devildog on Pendleton this weekend) I carry a propane cylinder and a bag of BBs in a buttpack or assualt pack and reload at respawn or while bleeding out.  But at larger OPs you don't shoot as much sometimes so you may go half the day and not have to reload.

Playing by AMS rules makes things a little more complicated since you have to be in the FOB to reload.  For GBBR users that takes a bit of prior planning and maybe carrying a few more mags in your backapack.

It's up to you I guess in the long run.  I enjoy it.  To me it makes the game more "real" I guess and the sound is pretty cool as is the recoil.  i also like my airsoft gear to mimic my real stuff as close as possible.  When my gear isn't being used for airsoft it has AR and GLOCK mags loaded on it and gets used at USPSA, IDPA, and other shooting events.

Speaking of weight the GBBR rifles tend to be real weight as well and not some lightweight pieces like some AEGs.  Some folks get tired of lugging that weight all day.  Doesn't bother me as much but I'm semi-used to it.

Edit- Don't forget about maintenance.  Compared to an AEG a GBBR requires a good bit more maintenance as far as cleaning and parts seem to fail quicker.  I've had to fuss with my hop-up a lot to make it work for me using .28s.  Infact at OP Devildog I had a serious range issue (my pistol was shooting farther than my rifle even though the rifle was making 360fps on .25s (what they chronoed with) that I need to pull the barrel and addres....again.  But again I find the GBBR to be much more fun to run that the AEGs.

In a GBBR magazine's defense, I only used lowcap magazines for years.  It's fun, but 2-3 prolonged engagements and you'll be out (figure 210 BBs loaded in 7 mags).  If you're only going to shoot a little bit, make sure your gun can hit what you point it at.  Otherwise, I'd start out with a much cheaper and easier to mess with AEG.
