If you really want to wear traditional dresses, just start to wear kilts. It’s the heritage of Scotland and resemblance of Scottish culture

No, camping is optional. :)

It is optional, but it is very practical to do so. It certainly keeps you off the streets when your tired from a day of running up and down those damned hills.

Follow up question: What do people usually do for food when camping?  Obviously there isn't a "lunch break" so I plan to bring stuff to eat on the field for lunch, but I would like a hot meal at night. Can we bring charcoal grills, or is gas the way to go?

Yes, you can bring Grills -- no open fires, I'd say charcoal is the best.

People go out and eat or cook at camp.
